Chapter Nineteen

Getting Ready for School Dance

Dazzle and Delight ran in the door to the kitchen with excitement all over their happy faces. Mama Ruth sat wondering what was wrong with her girls.

“Whoa ladies, what is going on with you two?” Mama didn’t have a clue what was going on, so they decided to let her in the excitement.

“Mama, we are going to our first high school dance this Saturday night at the school gym. You won’t believe what has happened to us.” Delight and Dazzle didn’t know how their parents will take this, but we will tell them anyway.

“Mama, you won’t believe this, but we both had boys who wanted to take us to the dance. It’s like a real date.” Dazzle couldn’t wait for the big event.

Russel came home from work early. He thought he heard the girls talking loudly.

“Hey girls, what’s wrong,” Dad smiled at his girls, who were not little girls anymore.

“You won’t believe it. There is our first high school dance, and Delight and I already have dates.” Russel’s smile went away.

“Okay, this is the way it’s going to be. I need to meet these two boys, so tomorrow at supper, tell them to come eat with us. Your Uncle John and family will be here too. That will be a good thing to do.”

“Daddy, I have a suggestion.” Dazzle had a plan as she often does.

“What do you have in mind, Miss Dazzle?” Mama was loving this.

“Could you tell Uncle John to not wear his uniform, and dad, I would like for you to not be cleaning your shotgun if that’s okay with you.”

Russel and Mama Ruth started laughing so hard, there were tears in their eyes.

“This is it, Mama. They are growing up. We knew this day would come, but I just didn’t think it would be so soon.” Russel looked at his wife as her tears ran down her cheeks.

Mama and Dad were both jumping up and down in laughter. They seemed to be taking all this well now that they thought about it a little more.

“Do these boys have a name?” Dad was smiling.

Dazzle looked at her dad as she said, “I’m going with John Tater.”

“Delight, does your date have a name?” Mama asked.

“Yes Ma’am, his name is Turtle Brown.” Delight didn’t look at anyone.

Jake called and asked if they could come over early this afternoon, so the girls could teach them how to dance. The girls had already told the boys they would help them. They couldn’t wait to help the boys with their dancing skills.

“Joe is not in high school yet. How is he able to go?” Mama Ruth asked. The parents were starting to get tickled again.

“He can go, Mama, because a girl in high school asked him to be her date.”

“You go, Joe!” hollered Mama.

“Don’t forget to tell Uncle John not to wear his uniform tomorrow night,” Dazzle says.

“Why would these boys be nervous of a policeman was here?” Dad was wondering.

“As far as I know, they have never been in jail before.
